WE NEED A HERO! STOP THE BACKROOM DEALING
The communities of Williamsburg and Greenpoint are facing one of the most aggressive rezonings in NYC history. If the Bloomberg plan passes as is, we can expect a wall of skyscrapers along the waterfront (some 40 stories tall!), the loss of 4,000 local jobs, stagnation of parks or open space, minimal (and segregated) affordable housing, and a radical influx of transnational capital.
Hundreds of people from the community showed up for the public hearing on April 4th, but City Council Speaker Gifford Miller was a COMPLETE no-show. A few days later he took the Chairman of the Zoning Committee –the one person who listened to community concerns– off the Williamsburg/Greenpoint rezoning team. Now we can’t seem to get a meeting with him or anyone else involved with negotiating the fate of our beloved neighborhoods.
HEY ! WHY DONT YOU LISTEN TO THE COMMUNITY?
Will Gifford step up to the plate to save the day? WILL GIFFORD redeem himself? Will GIFFORD MILLER BE OUR HERO?
Please come out tomorrow, we need you there. Brooklyn demands a better plan.

TUG OF WAR: FLOWERS vs TOWERS*
One one side are the “community plan” flowers, on the other are the “bloomberg plan” towers. It’s a stalemate, the tension is high. Will Miller come down from his office to pick a side? Will he champion a balanced and responsible rezoning? We need a hero!
