http://www.americas-society.org/as/art/satellite.html FOR A COMPLETE PROGRAM SEE: http://www.16beavergroup.org/events/archives/000647.php Açúcar Invertido II Rés de Chão’s Açúcar Invertido II is realized under the umbrella of AS A SATELLITE, a program with independent cultural initiatives of the Americas. Açúcar Invertido II will be held in New York from December 2, 2003 through January 10, 2004. It is a “quarantine” with people and of projects manifesting symptoms of contemporary art. To realize Açúcar Invertido II, the Brazilian alternative space, Rés de Chão, is operating temporarily from a 2000 sq. ft. live/work loft space in Brooklyn, New York located at 71 North 7th Street between Wythe and Kent Streets in Williamsburg. At times, Rés de Chão’s loft in Williamsburg simply functions as the home of Edson Barrus, founder of Rés de Chão, and as the guest quarters for the dozens of participating artists of Açúcar Invertido II. But more often, the loft functions as an art studio, performance venue, exhibition gallery, and overall creative laboratory open to the general public. As part of Açúcar Invertido II, Rés de Chão has organized real-time video stream/screenings, performances, interventions in the public space, exhibitions, and a number of public programs, which are being held or will be on view at Rés de Chão’s loft in Williamsburg; other times in public spaces, television, radio, the internet or at collaborating venues. Program highlights include: December 8, 6:00-8:00 p.m. December 19, 8:00 p.m.-12:00 a.m. December 28 and 29 December 15 - January 9 A number of the exhibitions and programs for Açúcar Invertido II were planned and scheduled in advance. However, during the 40-day period, some events of Açúcar Invertido II will take place spontaneously; certain programs will be organized or realized without prior announcement; and several other projects might just happen, by chance, or by accident. To view the program calendar and for more details on the numerous planned events of Açúcar Invertido II, please visit: http://www.americas-society.org/as/art/satellite.html. This website will be updated frequently to include programs that are added throughout the quarantine. To participate or be informed, please visit the website regularly. The programs of Açúcar Invertido II involve dozens of artists and cultural producers from Brazil and abroad, including Ricardo Basbaum, Yann Beauvais, Carine Cadilho, Ana Paula Cardoso, Marcelo Cucco, Thomas Köner, Artur Leandro, Daniela Mattos, Carmem Riquelme, Rick Santos, Tato Teixeira, and groups such as Los Vaderramas, Grupo Urucum, and Dig Improvizzo, among others. Many of these artists and groups will be visiting New York City—and staying at Rés de Chão’s loft in Williamsburg—at different times throughout the 40-day program schedule of Açúcar Invertido II. Other artists have already been (and will continue) sending their projects or instructions from abroad: Bruno Vieira, based in Belo Horizonte, has invited a number of artists to send their “packaged” art via postal mail; Camila Rocha will be connected via email from Finland; and Rachel Rosalén will be transmitting/streaming her project from Japan. AS A SATELLITE>>Rés de Chão is accompanied by a four-page, black and white brochure that includes an introductory text on Rés de Chão’s history and vision, a schedule of planned events, and contact information for Rés de Chão’s loft in Williamsburg and Rio de Janeiro. AS A SATELLITE is a program with independent cultural initiatives in Latin America, Canada, and the Caribbean, which consists of positioning and using The Americas Society as their satellite for the production of exhibitions and event-based projects in New York. AS A SATELLITE entails the co-production and presentation of a number of projects conceptualized by selected artist-run or artist-led initiatives, one of which is Rés de Chão, an alternative space in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that was initiated in 2002 by Edson Barrus, an artist and cultural producer. AS A SATELLITE >>Rés de Chão reflects the relationship and cross-cultural influences of artistic practices and disciplines, and will generate a diverse network of people and ideas. Although the three initiatives selected for AS A SATELLITE, operate from the Americas, the projects organized under the umbrella of this program, such as Rés de Chão’s Açúcar Invertido II, have included artists and other cultural producers from throughout the world thereby generating a global and interdisciplinary dialogue across numerous artistic, cultural, and geographic borders. Other AS A SATELLITE programs have included the artists-run center Muro Sur Artes Visuales (Santiago, Chile), the multi-disciplinary collective Instant Coffee (Toronto Canada), and the now defunct artist-run center, La Panaderia (Mexico City, Mexico). AS A SATELLITE is generously supported by The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Additional support has been provided by the Elliott Family Foundation. AS A SATELLITE media sponsors include: Art Nexus, Parachute, Latin Arte, Arte al Dia, and Latinarte.com. |
