1. About this Monday Night

What: Talk / Discussion
Where: 16 Beaver Street, 4th floor (directions below)
When: Monday Night 11.07.05 @ 7:30 PM
Who: Open To All

Impuls was an experimental commune or intentional community that was founded in Pieterburen, in the north of the Netherlands in 1972. This was also the same year that Gabriel Lester was born. Tonight's talk is in no way a prepared lecture, nor is it intended to be seen as Gabriel's artistic practice. Instead it is an informal talk that will trace through some photos taken by G's father and include some personal experiences living in the commune as a child.

This evening came out of some casual conversations with Gabriel and connects to a sincere interest we have had at 16Beaver in imagined, inoperative, coming, intentional or unintentional communities. The hope is that through this specific example of the Impuls commune, via a live memoir, we may generate an interesting discussion about community, the organization of everyday life and some of the obstacles confronting attempts to thwart the standard organization of social relations. At the very least, it will be a very specific account of very specific commune which has been among other things, the subject of two books, including the bestselling Dutch novelist Tessa de Loo's 'Meander'.

3. A bit of information

There is very little about the commune available online, particularly in English. Funnily there is some information on the founder of the commune - Rene Kres - who, in the memory of those who were part of the commune is a self-proclaimed, pseudo enlightened guru... Funny, because he is a teacher in the art of clown (founder, also, of the Amsterdam Clowns School). For more info:
