MondaysNovember 17, 2005Thursday Night 11.17.05 -- Sharon Hayes & Carey Young -- Presentation/DiscussionThursday Night 11.17.05 -- Sharon Hayes & Carey Young -- Presentation/Discussion
*Given that they are both artists who work with or invoke performative elements / systems in their work. We felt there was good reason to invite you this Thursday to an event with Carey Young and Sharon Hayes at 16Beaver.
Sharon Hayes will talk about two recent projects. AFTER BEFORE: a quasi-fictional, quasi-documentary video project in which two central figures investigate the pronouncement and production of “public opinion” by interviewing people on the streets of New York City throughout the month of September 2004, just two months before the 2004 US Presidential Elections. Carey Young is an artist based in London. Her solo show 'Consideration' at Paula Cooper Gallery (Nov 16 - 19) is included in the Performa05 Biennial. Young's key interest is in language and the body as subject to the rapacious growth of globalised business and law. Her works employ a variety of media such as performance, installation, photography, video and text, and often take the form of a performative system or process involving tools and language appropriated from the corporate or legal worlds. A number of her works have featured collaborations with specialists such as venture capitalists, conflict resolution specialists, call center agents, computer hackers, science fiction writers, lawyers and communication skills trainers. Combining an ambiguous political stance with a deadpan humour, her works reference conceptual art, political activism and multinational business tactics to explore the collapsing categories between politics, culture and commerce. For her talk at 16Beaver she will show and discuss various of her recent works.

Bibliography: ___________________________________________ Over the past ten years, Sharon Hayes has been engaged in an art practice that moves between multiple mediums–video, performance, installation–in an ongoing artistic investigation into the relations of history, politics and speech to the processes of individual and collective subject formation. To this aim, she employs conceptual and methodological approaches borrowed from artistic and academic practices such as theater, film, anthropology, linguistics, and journalism. Hayes’ work investigates the present political moment, through a critical examination of various historic texts, including a speech from the 1968 Democratic National Convention and the transcripts of the audio tapes that Patricia Hearst and the Symbionese Liberation Army(SLA) sent to her parents during her kidnapping in 1974. The work utilizes performative strategies to filter a historic text through a process of interpretation that is necessarily informed by the historical gap that exists between two moments of enunciation: the original and the re-spoken or |
