2. Sulla televisione
Sul finire dell'Ottocento Sir William Crookes, inventore del tubo
catodico, era convinto che attraverso di esso ci sarebbero pervenute le
immagini dei "nostri cari trapassati". Oggi il sistema dei media rivela
pienamente la propria natura spettrale: elude ogni vincolo materiale, ogni
localizzazione nello spazio e nel tempo, ogni connotazione geografica e
territoriale. E' l'intrusione, desiderata e temuta dell'ospite inatteso,
del "mondiale", di un altro linguaggio e di un altro ritmo. Ma
nell'annullare ogni distanza, l' "espropriazione" televisiva innesca la
reazione di un localismo esasperato. Lo sviluppo dei media ha potentemente
contribuito alla "democratizzazione" su scala globale, spazzando via gli
ultimi resti die vecchi totalitarismi; ma rischiamo di perdere le nuove
sfide, perchè la stessa fede neoliberale nel mercato non riesce più a
controllare le potenze che ha scatenato. Di fronte a una televisione che
sembra offrirci a poco prezzo un mondo senza frontiere, siamo come
l'apprendista stregone: la via è aperta per il revival delle etnie, il
nazionalsimo delle minoranze, l'integralismo religioso. Questa regressione
accompagna, inesorabile come un'ombra, l'accelerazione del processo
tecnologico, costringendoci a ripensare l'universalità della comunicazione
e la natura della tecnica.

2. About television
Unlike telephony, cinema, or locomotion, television emerged as a prominent
figure of our time only after world war ii. There are many reasons for
this, the Nazi's voted in radio as a trasferrential agency par excellence;
television was cancelled out of the secret service of fascistold
transfiction. The mass invasion of television occurred after the war: It
was served on the cold war platter, which is to say that in one way or
another tv is not so much the beginning of something new, but is instead
the residue of an unadmissable history. Television is linked crucially to
the enigma of survival. It inhabits the contiguous neighborhood of broken
experience and rerouted memory.

del Centro di Arte Contemporanea, , Vilnius [http://www.cac.lt]. Ha
partecipato al programma curatoriale della De Appel Gallery ad Amsterdam.
Lavora con il progetto The File Room [http://www.thefileroom.org], e

recentemente un'intervista psichica con il fondatore del movimento Fluxus
George Maciunas (1934-1978), di cui qui sotto alleghiamo alcune

" Nel 2002 ho raccolto 60 domande da varie persone che erano interessate
alla vita e alla dopo-vita di George Maciunas'(1934 - 1978), fondatore del
movimento Fluxus. Mr. David Magnus, uno psychic medium di New York, ha
tenuto un incontro durante il quale George Maciunas parlò per quasi due
ore. Questo risultò essere la più estesa intervista con un artista dopo la
sua morte. Nel 1969 Robert Barry ha trasmesso un messaggio telepatico al
mondo, che era un'opera d'arte "la cui natura era una serie di pensieri
non applicabili al linguaggio né alle immagini".
Comunque nessuno venne
mai a sapere se qualcuno avesse mai ricevuto il messaggio. Ho trovato
estremamente affascinante il pensiero sul destino di questo messaggio.
Seguendo la più elementare teoria delle informazioni (non includendo
necessariamente ESP) il messaggio trasmesso non poteva essere sparito nel
nulla - è ancora lì - nella info-sfera. Anche se qualcuno lo avesse
ricevuto, ciò non esclude la possibilità che potrebbe essere ricevuto da
qualcun altro in ogni momento. Al contario dell'estasi dell'istantaneità e
del tempo reale dei nostri giorni ho ricevuto in ritardo il messaggio di
Barry, dopo più di 30 giorni.
Questo sarà presentato durante l'esposizione con Jonathan Monk alla Galleria Jan Mot,
il 19 Marzo 2003. Le premesse di questo progetto saranno discusse durante
la presentazione insieme ad altre attività che includono la curatela al
centro di arte contemporanea, vilnius (lithuania) www.cac.lt, running the
so-called records www.socalledrecords.com e la serie di eventi Bi-Fi a
NYC. La presentazione si indirizzerà sul concetto di "channeling" come
mezzo di produzione culturale".

CAC TV: Every program is a pilot. Every program is the final episode

LOG-LINE: An amorphous group of social misfits and cultural outcasts are
handed the reigns of a fledgling television program. Not having any
experience in making television, they decide to re-invent the medium.
SYNOPSIS:
A time-slot for imagining alternate realities.
FREQUENTLY GIVEN RESPONSES:
- It is a new project of the Contemporary Art Centre, Vilnius.
- It is a TV program about making a TV program.
- It is produced by artists and television enthusiasts worldwide.
- Yes, the interest has been surprising. In fact, it had its official
review of 1500 words before it went to an editing room.
- No, we prefer talking heads being inside the soundtrack instead of on
the screen.
- Actually, it introduces the genre of reality meta-show both as a
deconstruction of the format of reality (programming) and as an attempt to
create one's own (reality)(programming)(reality-programming).
- Well, one possible premise would be to imagine what kind of television
could be produced if we were to invite a group of thinkers (i.e., Pierre
Bourdieu, Avital Ronell, Paul Virilio, Raymond Williams, Jacques
Derrida) to collaborate with a rotating cast of artists, cable-access
producers, anti-capitalists, tele-evangelists, and day time talk show hosts.
- Failure is the underwriter of this program, and cancellation is one of
several goals we have before we can call this a success.
- Yes, it follows the adventures of strangers, fans and TV-sceptics
inside TV-land through planned accidents and unscripted actions.
- Good question. The show consists of two basic formats: the broadcast
version (including a showcase of artists films, games and devices) and
TVlog (whose excerpt please find below).
- It dreams of turning audience members and spectators into an active
public possibly even producers. It dreams of inducing wakefulness and
tapping into the inherent power of the multitude to counter the sleep
inducing nonsense that often passes as entertainment. Activating the
creativity and critical skills of the viewer while still remaining
watch-able. You know what we mean?
- We would not be doing it if we did not think that it would in fact be
an invitation to the viewers/participants to dream together.
- Believe it or not, it airs once a week on TV1, a commercial TV channel
in Lithuania.
- It lasts 30 minutes minus a commercial break.
